Hamlin Garland
Brown County · South Dakota
Garland's own account dates the book later. In a foreword of 1922 he wrote that in the summer of 1887, after three years in Boston, he finally had money enough for the fare to Ordway, where his father and mother were living, and that a talk with his mother suggested the first story. Main-Travelled Roads appeared in 1891, dedicated to parents whose half-century on the road had brought them only toil and deprivation. His own Dakota claim lay in McPherson County, where two dry summers ended his farming.
