Casa de Machado y Stewart
San Diego, San Diego County · California
Richard Henry Dana came back to San Diego in 1859, more than twenty years after loading hides at La Playa, and walked into this adobe. A woman recognized him and told him she had married his old shipmate. Jack Stewart had gone out as second mate on the next voyage, then left the ship, married Rosa Machado in 1845 and stayed. They raised eleven children here and the family held the house into the 1960s. The marker is a printed park timeline, not a cast plaque.
