Box Elder Academy of Music and Dancing
Brigham City, Box Elder County · Utah
American ballet has roots in a Brigham City dance hall. Christian and Peter Christensen — sons of a Danish immigrant musician — opened the Box Elder Academy of Music and Dancing in 1903, dancing upstairs and an open-air pavilion below, promising to make music and dance part of every well-equipped young person's education. Christian's boys grew up in the place, trained by their father and their ballet-schooled uncle, and three became giants: Willam founded Ballet West, Lew directed the San Francisco Ballet, Harold its school. The hall later held roller skating, bowling, and Thiokol offices.
