Bear River City Pioneers
Bear River, Box Elder County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1947
This monument fixes a threshold. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers raised it in 1947 to honor the founders of Bear River City — those who wintered in the riverbank dugouts in 1866, the families of the old fort, and everyone who reached Utah before May 10, 1869. That date was the pioneers' dividing line: the day the golden spike joined the rails at Promontory, a short ride west in this county, ending the overland crossing forever. To have come before it, on foot or by wagon, was to be a pioneer. This stone honors those who did.
