The Story

Red Hills Lake is a small lake in the Sabine National Forest, a short distance from Toledo Bend Reservoir and near Milam in Sabine County. The Forest Service says the Civilian Conservation Corps completed it in 1940. The lake covers 19 acres. The Sabine National Forest takes in 160,656 acres in Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, Jasper and Newton counties, on the Texas-Louisiana line, and the Forest Service describes Toledo Bend as a 185,000-acre reservoir.

The day-use area has a designated swimming beach, picnic tables with fire rings, vault toilets, potable water and parking. Fishing is allowed in the lake and pond, and non-motorized boating is listed. The camping area has single sites, some with electric hookups, and a camp host site. Quiet time runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

To get there from Milam, go 2.5 miles north on Texas 87. From San Augustine, take Highway 21 east 18 miles to Milam, then turn north on Highway 87. Day use is $3 per vehicle, or $30 for an annual pass, and camping is $6 a night, or $10 with an electric hookup. The listed season is May 1 to October 31, and the Forest Service has closed the site for the season from November 1, so call the Sabine National Forest office at 409-625-1940 before you go.
