William Craig
Nez Perce County · Idaho
The woman the sign does not name was Pahtissah, daughter of Hin-mah-tute-ke-kaikt, Thunder Eyes, later called James, whose home was at Lapwai; Craig renamed her Isabel. When the beaver trade collapsed, Craig brought Isabel and their children here, to her father's country, in 1840. The Nimiipuu asked for a provision in their treaty that let Craig keep the farm on land otherwise closed to whites, and his place became a meeting ground for councils of up to two thousand people. He and Isabel are buried at Jaques' Spur, on the land he chose.
