Union Wounded
Leola, Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
Nobody agrees on how many men fell at Jenkins' Ferry. Union reports claimed 63 killed, 413 wounded and 45 missing. Confederate reports claimed 86 killed, 356 wounded and one missing, although a summary table in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas gives 160 killed and 622 wounded. The Texas division's incomplete returns show 74 killed and 266 wounded, and historians believe the true totals were higher because some units never filed reports. Wikipedia adds that Shelby Foote and Gregory Urwin estimated roughly 1,000 Confederate and 700 Union casualties, both above the reported totals.
