Pontoon Bridge
Leola vic., Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
Steele did not plan to cross at Jenkins' Ferry. His column first tried the Saline at Pratt's Ferry, where Elder Joab Pratt, a Baptist preacher from Bibb County, Alabama, had settled in 1841 and run a ferry; Prattsville is named for him. The water was too high, so the army turned south. At the new crossing rain had turned the approaches to mud, and the engineers could not finish the bridge overnight on April 29. The army was still crossing when Confederate attacks came next morning, and the crossing was not finished until about three in the afternoon.
