Skirmish at Guesses Creek
Leola, Dallas County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
One local account puts the Union guns on the north ridge at Guesses Creek around noon on April 29, 1864, covering the wagon train, with Confederate fire coming from the south ridge. A shell that struck the house left a hole, and after the battle it served as a Confederate hospital for Jenkins' Ferry wounded. People nearby called it the Cannonball house for as long as it stood. It burned in 1967. The marker sits on a rough dirt road, 1.6 miles south of where the pavement ends.
