Tunitas Beach, Indian Village Site on Portolá Route

The register calls this a village the expedition discovered, then gives it no name and no people. It fixes the place instead by the southwest corner of a rancho, Cañada de Verde y Arroyo de la Purísima, granted in 1838 to José María Alviso and passed to his brother José Antonio. Costansó's diary for 27 October, the day the party walked north past this creek, mentions no village on the road, only a long slope down to a small stream's mouth. The state knows whatever stood here by a property line. Nothing marks it.
