Old Store at La Honda

La Honda, San Mateo County · California

Nothing cast marks this corner, and the store John Sears built came down in the 1960s. The only plaque at the crossroads, an engraved 1978 county historical association plate on Apple Jack's diagonally across, tells the old blacksmith shop's story instead. The register says two of the men Sears hired to build it, Jim and Bob Younger, were later proved James gang members. The dates give them two alibis. Bob was eight when Sears arrived in the winter of 1861-62, and La Honda's historian dates the store to 1877, when both brothers were serving life at Stillwater, Minnesota.
