Tulip in the Civil War
Tulip, Dallas County · Arkansas
Erected 2013
The skirmish was a dawn raid. At about four in the morning on October 11, 1863, Colonel Powell Clayton led some 300 men of the 5th Kansas and 1st Indiana Cavalry, with four mountain howitzers, against Colonel Archibald Dobbins's 1st Arkansas Cavalry. A Union report counted 600 Confederates; Dobbins said he fell back with about 200. They left behind tents, wagons, arms and a battle flag. The only Union casualty was Clayton himself, grazed by a bullet. Enslaved people worked Tulip's plantations, and by the 1850 census at least eleven owners held more than twenty each.
