Arkansas Military Institute
Tulip, Dallas County · Arkansas
Erected 2013
George Douglass Alexander started the Alexander Institute in Tulip in August 1849, and when the legislature chartered the Arkansas Military Institute on December 17, 1850, he became its superintendent. Cadets wore uniforms closely modeled on West Point's. Albert Pike addressed the combined graduating classes of the institute and the Tulip Female Collegiate Seminary on June 4, 1852, and by 1856 the school's emphasis had moved from military to literary studies. The state's geological samples and the Antiquarian Society's collections were sent here for safekeeping, and an invading army scattered them in 1864; they were never recovered.
