Tulip
Tulip, Dallas County · Arkansas
The Encyclopedia of Arkansas passes along Tulip's capital story with doubt. Its Tulip entry says the town allegedly missed the honor by a few votes, and a separate entry lists Tulip beside Roseville, Rockport and Old Austin among places said to have missed it by one vote, calling such claims a little more spurious than the documented moves. The town's real run was 1842 to 1862. It began as Brownsville, for Tyre Harris Brown, then became Smithville for Colonel Maurice Smith, who is said to have remarked that more tulip trees than Smiths grew there.
