Timbuctoo

The state has marked this town twice and never at it. The Division of Highways cast the first bronze with a bear, two stars, 5 MILES and a left arrow. In 2022 State Parks and Caltrans cast a replacement, modernised the wording, set it on a brick plinth and gave the distance as 1.20 MILES with a right arrow. Both stand. Timbuctoo itself is on private ground off Timbuctoo Road, where the Stewart Brothers store, which both bronzes name, was restored in 1928.

1.20 Miles Timbuctoo In 1855, Timbuctoo was the largest town in eastern Yuba County. At the height of its prosperity it contained a church, theater, stores, hotels, saloons, a Wells Fargo office, and the Stewart Bros. store, which was restored in 1928 and dedicated to Timbuctoo's pioneering men and women.
