The Spire
Scottsdale, Maricopa County County · Arizona
This slender steel spire is a Frank Lloyd Wright design that waited nearly half a century to be built. Wright drew it in 1957 as part of his unrealized plan for a new Arizona State Capitol, a scheme the legislature declined. Decades later his successors at Taliesin Architects revived the drawing, and the 125-foot spire was raised and illuminated in April 2004 at the corner of Scottsdale Road and the boulevard that bears Wright's name. It stands as a fragment of a capitol that never rose, finally given form in the city where he wintered.
