The Reliance Tipple
Sweetwater County · Wyoming
Coal reached this tipple along a motor line more than a mile long, up to twenty-four cars at a time, and the 1936 machinery still inside sorted it. Each car was turned over in a rotary dump, the coal shaken into four sizes from powdery slack upward, then carried to sorting tables where pickers took out slate and rock by hand before it was loaded into hoppers and boxcars. In 1943 the Reliance mines produced 1.4 million tons. Wyoming's other standing tipple, at Aladdin in the Black Hills, is built of wood.
