Rock Springs Stage Station Site
Sweetwater County · Wyoming
The springs the stone names did not outlast the mines. The Overland stage moved its line south in 1862 after raids on its Sweetwater road, and the Rock Springs station stood near here on the west side of Killpecker Creek, by springs that came out of chalk cliffs. Its first keepers were two Scots, Archibald and Duncan Blair, who added a store and a bridge in 1866 and then a coal mine; Archie called the stream Kilpatrick Creek. The mining that grew from their start is what disrupted the spring that gave the town its name.
