The March of the Montana Column

Stillwater County · Montana

The panel's hired Crow warriors have names. Lieutenant James Bradley enlisted about twenty-five Apsáalooke men at the agency in April 1876, for six months with the 7th Infantry. On June 21, at the mouth of Rosebud Creek, Gibbon lent six to Custer because they knew the Rosebud and Little Bighorn country: Half Yellow Face, their leader, with White Swan, Goes Ahead, Hairy Moccasin, White Man Runs Him and Curly. From the divide at dawn on June 25 they warned Custer that the camp ahead was very large. He went on without heeding them.
