The Great Inland Seaway
Stillwater County · Montana
The panel lists Deinonychus only as the model for the film's raptors. It is a Montana animal. In late August 1964 John Ostrom and Grant Meyer of Yale's Peabody Museum found its bones near Bridger, in the Early Cretaceous Cloverly Formation, a land deposit rather than this sea's floor. Ostrom's February 1969 description of a fast, agile predator, illustrated with a running sketch by a student on the dig, Robert Bakker, began what Bakker later called the dinosaur renaissance, and its likeness to the early bird Archaeopteryx revived the case that birds descend from dinosaurs.
