The Evans House
Phoenix, Maricopa County County · Arizona
Dr. John Evans, a pioneer physician, and his wife Jennie built this Queen Anne house in 1893, when Phoenix was a dusty territorial town and a two-story home with turrets and gingerbread trim was a statement. It survived long enough to make the National Register in 1976, then was rescued by the state through the efforts of Representative Polly Rosenbaum, a fierce guardian of Arizona history, and restored in 1988. It is one of the last of the ornate Victorian homes that once lined Phoenix's early residential streets.
