Supplies Destroyed

Leola vic., Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2015

The army that lost its wagons at the Saline was already hungry. Steele's troops were on half rations from Little Rock onward, and Camden held none of the supplies rumored to be there. A foraging column sent west for corn was ambushed at Poison Spring on April 18. Provisions did not reach him from Pine Bluff until April 20, and the next supply train was lost at Marks' Mills on April 25. By the end of the campaign the Union side counted 635 wagons and about 2,500 animals lost; the Confederates lost 35 wagons.
