Confederate Cannons Captured
Leola vic., Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
The Second Kansas Colored Infantry was organized at Fort Scott and Leavenworth in 1863. At Jenkins' Ferry its men charged a Confederate Missouri battery shouting "Remember Poison Spring," the cry of the First Kansas Colored, whose wounded and captured men Confederates had killed on April 18. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, three men trying to surrender at the guns were bayoneted before an Iowa regiment stopped it, and the Kansans killed many wounded Confederates after the battle. Confederates later killed nine of the regiment's own wounded. It became the 83rd U.S. Colored Troops in 1864.
