Battle of Jenkins' Ferry

Sheridan, Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2013

The Confederate attack came in pieces. Sterling Price sent Thomas Churchill's division forward first, and because of the terrain Churchill had to commit his brigades one at a time. Mosby Parsons's division advanced to help and was ineffective, and John Walker's division arrived too late to turn the fight. Frederick Salomon's rear guard, reinforced by John Thayer's Frontier Division, held the line. Kirby Smith called off the assault around 12:30 p.m., Salomon crossed the Saline, and the army burned the pontoon bridge behind it. Steele reached the Little Rock arsenal on May 3.
