Historical Marker · No. 712
Soberanes Adobe
Monterey, Monterey County · California
Nothing cast marks the house; a printed State Parks sign at the gate directs visitors to the tours. The register says José Estrada built it in 1830 and sold it to Feliciano Soberanes; the park that runs it names Rafael Estrada and the 1840s. The Soberanes family lived here from 1860 to 1922. The register credits a Mrs. O'Donnell with giving the house to the state in 1953, and the park's account ends with the historian Mayo Hayes O'Donnell, who lived here until 1978. Wine bottles, whale bone and abalone shells edge the garden paths.
