Old Pacific House
Monterey, Monterey County · California
Nothing cast marks the building; its only lettering is the painted sign of the state park museum inside. Built as a hotel between 1835 and 1847, it was the Pacific House by 1850, lodging seafaring men, and the new county rented rooms in it for a courtroom. Behind it lay a walled corral where, into the 1860s, townspeople gathered on Sundays to watch a lassoed grizzly, roped to a bull, fight it. The memory garden that replaced the corral was planted in the late 1920s.
