Nothing cast marks the building. Painted lettering on its walls advertises Jos. Boston & Co. with crockery, dry goods, provisions and notions, and a bronze donor board in the garden lists dozens of names. Thomas Larkin had the two-storey adobe built in the 1840s and rented it to Joseph Boston for a store. The name Casa de Oro comes from a story that miners left their gold here. The state register calls that story unverified; the state park that runs the building says the town's only safe is still inside.
