Site of the Town of Zavala
Jasper, Jasper County · Texas
Erected 1936
Zavala's best-documented deal came in 1847, when Thomas B. Huling, on whose land the town was probably laid out, sold most of his interest and almost 5,000 acres of Jasper County to Jerich Durkee of London, the Handbook of Texas reports. The price was $1,000 in cash and 5,000 tin boxes of vegetable ointment. The entry says the town had thirty to forty families and was incorporated on December 24, 1838, and that a fire in the 1840s destroyed the courthouse, homes and nearly all records. It dates the closing of the post office to 1856.
