Site of the Town of Bevilport

Jasper vicinity, Jasper County · Texas
Erected 1936

Bevilport had a main street and a hotel by the 1850s, and the Handbook of Texas says it served as the freight depot for northern Jasper County in high water. The same entry says Sam Houston bought the first lot, a post office opened in 1854, and the post office closed for good in 1899. Logging for Beaumont sawmills in the 1870s obstructed river traffic below the Angelina's meeting with the Neches, and the town faded. By 1948 only two old store buildings and the Randolph C. Doom house, built in 1852, remained, the entry reports.
