Here Lived Dr. Stephen H. Everitt
Jasper, Jasper County · Texas
Erected 1936
Despite the title Dr., the Handbook of Texas says Stephen Hendrickson Everitt was apparently not a practicing physician. It describes him as a politician, merchant and speculator who ran stores at Bevilport and Sabine Pass and owned town lots in Bevil, Jasper and Belgrade. He backed Mirabeau B. Lamar and was one of three commissioners to close the land offices of the Department of Nacogdoches. He sat for Jasper County in the Republic's first five congresses and resigned in December 1840. The entry gives his birth as November 26, 1806, in Poughkeepsie; the plaque says 1807.
