Site of the Home of Robert Justus Kleberg
Meyersville, DeWitt County · Texas
Erected 1936
Robert Justus Kleberg married Rosalia von Roeder in September 1834 and left Europe at the end of that month. His party crossed on the Congress, and the schooner Sabin, chartered at New Orleans, wrecked off Galveston Island on December 22, 1834. The family settled at Cat Spring, Austin County, in November 1836 and stayed until the fall of 1847, when they moved to DeWitt County. He was elected county commissioner in 1848 and chief justice in 1853, and was re-elected in 1854. The offices found in these accounts are local ones, though the plaque calls him a senator.
