Site of Haraszthy Villa

The villa Haraszthy built here in 1857 is gone. What stands is a copy Antonia Bartholomew commissioned in 1988 and finished in 1990 from photographs of the original. Here in October 1864 he held a masked ball for the harvest, with Vallejo and his wife as guests of honor, the state's first formal vintage celebration. Within two years he had lost Buena Vista, and in 1869 he vanished in Nicaragua. No state plaque stands here; the county's 1975 bronze misspells him Harazthy, and the grounds open only in visiting hours.
