Site of First City Hall of West Monroe
West Monroe, Ouachita County · Louisiana
The old city hall cost about $13,000. Built in 1907 by Frank Masling and finished in 1908, it was brick in front with concrete trim, 80 by 37 feet, with rooms all the same size around a central staircase. The marshal, tax collector, fire department and jail were downstairs; the mayor, secretary, treasurer and council chamber were upstairs. Fire destroyed the building in 1964 and it was razed the next year. The bell, rung for years at West Monroe High School after touchdowns, now hangs in a replica bell tower on the original site, in Antique Alley.
