Salt Creek Oil Field
Midwest, Natrona County · Wyoming
The board's 1908 strike was Dutch. The Petroleum Maatschappij Salt Creek, a Dutch company, had an Italian geologist, Dr. Porro, site its Dutch No. 1 beside a large seep south of the first wells, and the well came in through about a thousand feet of shale. The money in the early field was seldom local: the Midwest Oil Corporation's predecessors also included a Belgian Societe Belgo-Americaine des Petroles du Wyoming, a Franco Petroleum Company and Philip M. Shannon's Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Company, whose 1889 well opened the field.
