Bozeman Trail

Edgerton, Campbell County · Wyoming
Erected by State of Wyoming, 1914

The state set this stone in 1914 beside the road the trail had become, the same year its old river crossing died. After the wars the Rock Creek Stage Line ran this way from 1877, with a station and blacksmith shop on Antelope Creek to the south and a stop at Powder River Crossing, the fifth out of Fort Fetterman, which Amanda and Horace Brown kept from 1884 to 1887. In 1895 the road was rerouted to cross the river at Sussex, and in 1914 a new bridge and post office there put an end to Powder River Crossing.
