Rock in the Glen
Converse County · Wyoming
The sign gives its hunter an initial and nothing more. L. Maxwell was Lucien Maxwell, born at Kaskaskia in 1818 and Kit Carson's close friend, who rode with Frémont as chief hunter. In 1844 he married into the Beaubien family at Taos, and in time came to own more than 1.7 million acres of land in the Southwest, among the largest private holdings in American history. The interpreter the sign names, Joseph Bissonette, later kept the trading post at Deer Creek, less than a mile east.
