Historical Marker
Ferdinand V. Hayden
Converse County · Wyoming
Erected by William Henry Jackson, 1931
The man who paid for the stone had driven oxen past this spot. William Henry Jackson first followed the Oregon Trail in 1866 as a hired bullwhacker, then spent the survey seasons his bronze names, 1870 to 1878, as Hayden's photographer. By 1931 he was in his late eighties and the Oregon Trail Memorial Association's research secretary, placing markers along the road he had walked, and he set this one for his old chief. The plate at the foot is his; the carved face is Hayden's.
