Road to Marks' Mills
Fordyce, Dallas County · Arkansas
Erected 2016
The column on this road was bigger than its soldiers. Lieutenant Colonel Francis Drake left Camden with more than 1,200 infantrymen, artillery, cavalry and 240 wagons, and about 300 Black civilians and an unknown number of white civilians went along. On April 25, 150 cavalrymen from Pine Bluff joined, bringing the fighting men to nearly 1,800, while about 520 more trailed behind. By the Encyclopedia of Arkansas's account, about 150 of the Black civilians were captured at Marks' Mills and more than 100 others are believed to have been killed.
