Marks Family Experience

New Edinburg, Cleveland County · Arkansas
Erected 2014

The mills came before the family's war. John H. Marks built a sawmill and a flour mill on this site in 1834, and they were still running in 1864, so both armies used them as landmarks. The Marks homestead and cemetery sit at the edge of the field, and descendants Edgar and Sue Marks Colvin present interpretive materials there. The legislature made the 6.2-acre place a state park in 1961 with Act 164, one of three Camden Expedition sites in a National Historic Landmark. The battlefield was listed on the National Register on January 21, 1970.
