Battle of Marks' Mills
New Edinburg, Cleveland County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Lieutenant Colonel Francis Drake commanded the Union column at Marks' Mills, and he was seriously wounded there. The better-known name from the Camden Expedition is Powell Clayton, who held command at Pine Bluff from October 1863 and was promoted to brigadier general on August 1, 1864. As governor from 1868 he ordered the state militia against Ku Klux Klan violence and declared martial law in fourteen counties. He also helped found the state Republican Party and, in 1871, was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1877.
