Battle of Marks' Mills
Fordyce, Dallas County · Arkansas
Erected 2016
Fagan's cavalry struck the Union column from two directions at once. Joseph Shelby's division came in from the east and William Cabell's from the southwest, and Fagan's own losses were 293: 41 killed, 108 wounded and 144 missing. The 43rd Indiana and 36th Iowa slowed Cabell's first charge. About 500 men of the 1st Iowa Cavalry, trailing the column on furlough, attacked from the west when they heard the guns, but the column still surrendered after nearly five hours. Fagan had more than 2,000 cavalrymen in all.
