The panel takes Nathaniel Langford's word for the gang, and so did Montana for a century. Langford and Thomas Dimsdale wrote the accounts Henry Plummer's legend rests on, both after he was hanged without a trial. On May 7, 1993, the public schools of Twin Bridges, the town around this panel, staged a posthumous trial in Virginia City, with a sitting judge, Barbara Brook, presiding and twelve registered voters as the jury. They split six to six. A living defendant would have walked free, and historians afterward asked the governor for a pardon.
