Pioneer Grave (Grizzly Creek)

Erected by Plumas Pioneer Parlor No. 219, N.D.G.W.; Quincy Parlor No. 131, N.S.G.W., 1931
The register prints a legend and says so: a lad of nineteen who had packed provisions to the mines, murdered and robbed of his gold dust on the way back to Marysville, and a comrade who carved his name, age and month on a tree. Nothing beyond the story stands behind it, and nobody explains the O. H. under his age. The carved board itself now sits in a museum case. The 1931 bronze on this granite block copies it and says as much in its own words: copied from tree, carved by comrade, 1852.
