Pioneer Cemetery

North Branch was dug up for the gold under it and the cemetery across the road was not. That is why the graveyard is the landmark and the town is not. It was said to have been established in 1851, and most of the graves are unmarked; a count in 1936 found stones over three. One of them is cut for James Sheran of County Mayo, killed by a bank caving in on the South Fork in December 1854, aged twenty-seven. The carver spelled peace as pace.
