Pierian Club
Lampasas, Lampasas County · Texas
Erected 2002
The state federation the Pierians joined had begun five years earlier, in 1897, when the Woman's Club of Waco called the state's literary clubs together. Delegates from eighteen clubs formed the Texas Federation of Literary Clubs, and any women's study club could join if two federated clubs recommended it. It later became the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, the largest voluntary association of women in Texas, and in 1913 took the motto "In small things liberty, in large things unity, in all things charity." In Lampasas, five women's clubs founded the Lampasas Library and Social Club in 1901.
What the plaque says
Pierian Club Twenty civic-minded women in 1902 chartered the Pierian Club of Lampasas, which became a member organization of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs that same year. The club was named for the mythical Pierian Spring, and the members focused on literature, art, education, social issues, Texas heritage and philanthropy. In 1903, the Pierians joined with another group to begin a book collection for what would become the Lampasas Public Library. After more than a century, the club continues to support the library and to make substantial contributions to the betterment of the community. (2003)
