First Public School in Lampasas
Lampasas, Lampasas County · Texas
Erected 1965
Lampasas children were taught long before this building went up. Several residents kept schools before 1869, when money raised by county subscription paid for a two-story rock schoolhouse on Sulphur Creek. W. W. Chandler began a public school in 1892, and a building for it followed a couple of years later. School programs were the town's entertainment for a time, after an early theater built in the 1870s burned in the mid-1880s. By the 1980s two school districts, Lampasas and Lometa, ran six schools in the county.
