Peter Lassen Grave

The stone says the Indians killed him. Nobody knows that. Peter Lassen and Edward Clapper were shot at dawn on April 26, 1859, camped in the Black Rock country on a silver hunt. The one survivor, Lemericus Wyatt, rode back to the valley and blamed the Paiute, though nothing in the camp was taken, and many historians now suspect Wyatt. The granite obelisk beside the 1862 marble under its shelter gives his age as 66. He was 58. A flat stone beside it names Clapper.
