Indian Valley is Mountain Maidu country, and was long before Peter Lassen and his partner Isidore Meyerwitz came in the summer of 1850 looking for ranch land. Their log trading post of 1851 supplied the mining camps down on the Feather River; Lassen left for Honey Lake in 1855. For the Maidu the gold years were a collapse: about nine thousand people across their lands in 1846, some eleven hundred by 1910. Greenville Rancheria is a few miles west. Nothing of the post survives; the 1930 bronze on its granite block marks the site.
