Fort Janesville

Erected by Nataqua Parlor No. 152, N.D.G.W., 1961
The bronze says built in 1859. The fear that built it came in May 1860, when word reached Honey Lake Valley that Numu fighters led by Numaga had routed Major William Ormsby's volunteers at Pyramid Lake, killing seventy-six. The register still calls that the Ormsby Massacre. Settlers ran up a loopholed stockade around an existing cabin, with a blockhouse at one corner, and families spent a few nights inside. The attack never came, and the war never reached the valley. The town nearby was still called Bankhead's.
