Overland Stage Route (Point of Rocks)

Sweetwater County · Wyoming

The robbery most often told of this road's Point of Rocks station is pinned on Jack Slade, the stage line's onetime division agent, with seven passengers killed. The record does not bear it out. The line fired Slade for drunkenness in November 1862, after a spree at Fort Halleck, and vigilantes hanged him at Virginia City, Montana, on March 10, 1864; another telling moves the robbery to 1877, its dead said to lie in the cemetery nearby. The station itself, sandstone under a sod roof, survived an attempt to burn it.
